STATE MENT OF PURPOSE SOP SAMPLE 1
What does a pile of assorted nuts and bolts, a pile of cardboard, and an old Lego motor have in common? For me, these materials represent the building blocks of something easily built and accessible worldwide – something that will help benefit mankind. I have been interested in innovating new things out of apparent scraps since I was a child. I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, which I applied to service work both in the United States and internationally. Now, I am ready to take my skills and education to the next level. A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering will expose me to new principles and modes of thinking which will shape the way I perceive the world.
Ever since High School, I have held a great passion for utilizing my engineering skills to help aid developing countries. During college, I was a member of the Engineers without Borders team at my University. Over the course of two years, my team took trips to various areas within the United States to teach residents how to alleviate common problems – such as a burst pipe or a broken stove – with common everyday objects. After graduation, my interest focused on designing portable farming tools for workers in rural sub-Saharan Africa. I hope to continue utilizing my skills to help others improve their lives, and know that a graduate degree will enable me to fulfill my dreams.
Although returning to school will be challenging, I fully anticipate that I will be ready to diligently apply myself to succeeding. This Masters program in Mechanical Engineering will supply me with access to industry experts who can provide invaluable advice and insight into the engineering field. I look forward to working cooperatively with my fellow classmates to solve challenging problems. My goal is to utilize my skills and graduate education to further myself as an engineering professional who gives back to the community.

                                                                    Sample 2
Designing building involves rigrous in physics, engineering and art. This challenging field become a fascination of mine when I traveled to New York at the age of 13 I became enthralled by the great buildings around me each with its signature mark upon the New Yord skyline. I admired the modern buildings as well as the impressive structures standing tall for centuries. This fascination with buildings lead me to take architecture classes in high school and pursue a degree in Architecture. I hope to be able to use my Masters degree in architecture to design buildings for city developmentwith my academic knowledge and experience
My love for the processes of designing and planning building led me to seek many experiences in the field.During high school I entered into many competitions in building designs, I won first place at country-wide competition, and my design serve as the basis for the design of town community center. In college I undertook a project in which I worked with a leading design firm to create blue-prints for a shopping center.
I am very excited to work in conjunction with engineers, residents to design aesthetically pleasing buildings with variety of functions. In my future practice I would like to work closely with designers, engineers and clients to make certain that my model are accurate and customized. My design focus on personal safety and creating comfortable living space. I hope that a Masters Degree in  Architecture, combined with my substantial amount of field experience will give me the skills and tools to bring my envisioned design to life.

Statement of Purpose Sample 3
My decision to pursue graduate study in the United States is underscored by my desire to be a part of the graduate program at your institution. Purdue University offers the flexibility needed for such a vast and rapidly changing field. The research facilities and the faculty at the university are par excellent.Communications is an industry that has changed our lives. In a very short period it has changed the way we have looked at things since centuries. It is one industry that is going to shape our future for centuries to come. Hence my desire to do masters in electrical engineering with communications as my major.
My interest in electronics blossomed during my high school years. It was the time when technology had begun to make an impact on the lives of people in India. Hence engineering with electronics as my major was the first choice for my undergraduate studies. Right since the beginning of my undergraduate study electronics is a subject that has fascinated me with its power of applications. The subjects that I have studied include Linear Electronics, Digital Electronics. These laid the foundation for my courses in Electronic Communication & Communication Systems at a later stage. My undergraduate studies already focus on the communications aspect of electronics. A masters degree in electrical engineering with communications as major field is the next logical step.
For the past four months I have been working as a project trainee at the Indian Institute for Advanced Electronics. I am working on the design and development of a "PC Controlled Digital Serial Data Generator". This short stint has given me invaluable practical experience. It has given me the confidence to pursue a masters degree and also kindled a desire to do research.
During the course of my work at IIAE, I have come across several scientists. Most of them work in different areas of communications. Interactions with them have made me realize the vastness and the scope of communications. My discussions with them convinced me that specializing in communications will suit me very well. The subject of research which interests me very much is spread spectrum communication systems. Coding theory and combinations is another research subject which arouses my curiosity. The subject Communication Theory which I am studying at present introduces these topics in theory. I am eager to find out more about the applications of coding theory to spread spectrum communication systems.
In addition I have been a student member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) for the past three years. Through its workshops/seminars and publications like the 'The Spectrum' it has exposed me to a lot of emerging technologies in the field of communications. It is a strong belief in my family that the American education system has the best to offer in the whole world. This belief arises out of the experience that my parents had when they did their Masters of Science in the University of Pennsylvania during the years 1967-69. If I can get an opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to optimal use.
India is a developing country with an enormous potential in the information technology business. To serve the needs of this developing industry and more important its vast population, communications is going to become of utmost importance. Thus conditions here are very conducive to supplement my aspirations when I return after completing my graduate studies.

LETTER WRITING

Letter writing is a form of written communication.
Letters are documents written with a purpose.
You must keep three important points in mind when you write letters -- accuracy, brevity and clarity.
There are two types of letters - informal or personal letters, which express personal views, and formal or official letters which are written for official purposes.

INFORMAL LETTERS

The letters you write to friends and dear ones are called personal letters. Such letters express matters that are personal-your health and home, your feelings and your thoughts, your concern for people and things around you. Some of these letters may also contain business or official discussions. Nevertheless such letters are personal. In examinations, students are expected to write personal letters on particular topics to test their awareness and their ability to express their views. For personal letters, the body of the letter should be written within the scope of the given topic. The writer should introduce, describe and conclude the topic in the proper sequence.

Read the two examples of letters to friends.

I would like to come and see you to congratulate you personally. But I can't do that as I'll be away for a week from tomorrow I'm going to Delhi to present a paper. I'll tell you all about it later.

Anyway, good luck in your new job. I'll try to come and see you soon.

Best wishes
Jameel

Draft a letter to your friend inviting him to celebrate Dusshera with your family.

New Delhi
5 February 2010

Dear Vardhan,

I'm having a great time these days as it is the mid-term vacation. I will be going sightseeing with some of my friends who came here recently. I'm writing because I want you to visit me on the eve of Dusshera. My friends would like to meet you. But you must bring your warm clothes as it's getting colder every day.

Let me know as soon as you decide. And tell me what you're doing these days.
Bye for now!

Love
Sumithra

FORMAL LETTERS

We also write letters to people whom we do not know too well in order to communicate some information. These are called formal letters. These are used in business communication when letters are written to an organisation or when people within an organisation send written communication to those outside. The tone of a formal letter is distant. Unless you have a good reason, you should not include personal details in a formal letter. Every letter written in an organisation is a valid document necessary for administrative purposes. Therefore formal letters must be drafted with great care and attention to detail. The sender and the receiver are accountable for the details provided in these letters.

Some formal letters are business letters such as letters of enquiry orders, complaints and replies to these. Letters you write on official matters to superiors in your job and letters of application for jobs are also formal letters.

LETTERS OF COMPLAINT

You must learn to write every formal letter of yours in terms of four C's-correctness, clarity conciseness and courtesy. The same applies even to a letter of complaint.

You may prepare a complaint letter in terms of three S's: state (mention the problem), substantiate (present the problem clearly and in detail), seek a solution (suggest a specific solution).

REPLIES TO COMPLAINT

Be tactful and yet frank in your reply to a letter of complaint.
Put yourself in the shoes of the complainant.
Learn to focus on the issues and solutions, not the personality or the emotion.
Express your willingness and capability to understand complainants' feelings, whether you actually agree with their stand or not.
The demonstration of empathetic understanding goes a long way towards soothing their anger and disappointment, even if you are unable to provide a response which completely meets their expectations or initial demands.
